Understand your vision benefits

At Aetna, we want you to see better and feel better. That’s why we’ve put together some helpful information to guide you through using your vision benefits.

Member ID

Once enrolled, your member ID is the key to unlocking your benefits. Find your member ID in your welcome kit that was mailed to you. It will begin with the letter W.

Can’t find it? Call us at 1-877-973-3238 (TTY: 711) and use the automated prompts to get your ID. Using your member ID # or last 4 digits of your student ID, you can register on AetnaVision.com to see your vision benefits.

Get what you want, when and where you want with freedom of choice, without unnecessary restrictions. Choose from a wide range of eyewear brands and eye doctors, even online options. There is no deductible. The plan starts paying right away.

Allowance

The amount of money you can put towards your frames or contact lens purchase. If you have a $100 allowance for frames and you purchase frames that are $150, you pay $50 out-of-pocket (or less if you apply discounts and special offers).

Copay

A specific dollar amount that you pay out-of-pocket for a specific service at the time of service.

Discounted fee

A deduction from the usual cost of something a network provider will accept. Discounts are not insurance benefits under your policy. The application of any discount is separate and apart from your insurance benefits. Discounts shown may not be available through all providers, in all states.

Exam Services

Eye exams are how doctors keep tabs on your vision. Copays vary and are due at the time of service; your eye doctor will bill the rest of the cost to Aetna.

See your Vision Summary to see how often you can get services.

Lenses

You can use your lens benefit towards eyeglass lenses or contact lenses per benefit period There are different types of lens designs, lens materials and lens enhancements. Your eye doctor can help determine what may be right for you. You’ll simply pay a copay (if any) listed on your benefit summary.

You might also opt for lens enhancements, like polarization to help eliminate the sun’s glare or an anti-reflective coating designed to improve night vision. You’ll pay a copay or receive a discount when you stay in network for these options.

Contact Lenses

There are 2 parts to contact lens benefits: the lenses themselves and the process of appropriately fitting your contact lenses (called Fit and Follow-up exam). You still need an eye exam to check your overall eye health and general prescription, though contact lenses require different measurement and adjustment.

When it comes time to order your contacts, you receive an allowance to help cover the cost. You’ll only pay for anything above any beyond your plan allowance.

You can use your contact lenses allowance on one order of any number of boxes of contacts. You can do this once per benefit period — so be sure to get enough to take full advantage of the benefit.

Frames

Choose any available frame and receive 20% off any balance above your frame allowance when you purchase from an in-network provider. Want multiple pairs? You can receive up to 40% off additional pairs anytime throughout the benefit period.

Great savings on sunglasses

Sunglasses are more than for just looking stylish.

You can use your frame and lens benefit on prescription sunglasses. Non-prescription sunglasses are always available at 20% off retail at participating vision office locations. The same ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun that burn your skin can damage your eyes. So wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UVA and UVB rays4 to help reduce your risk for serious complications.

Special offers and perks

Being a member comes with exclusive savings. You can also save on the retail price of LASIK eye surgery, eye care accessories and more. Log in to AetnaVision.com.

Out-of-network claims

You can visit any eye care provider. But when you stay within the participating locations, you could pay less out of pocket. If you do choose to go to an out-of-network provider, submitting a claim is easy. Log in to AetnaVision.com to access our electronic claim form. Upload your receipts and submit. Or download a claim form here (PDF).
